LSUS Film Group: A Star is Born

This month we will be discussing the new film, A Star is Born.  To expand the discussion,we invite you watch at least one of the older versions - the Streisand/Kristofferson version (available online) and the Judy Garland version (available on YouTube). The "originals" may be also available at your local library as well.

We will meet at the Wilmette Panera Bread at 7 PM on Friday, October 26th.

Treats for Troops

Are you left with a mountain of candy after Halloween?  Don't let it go to waste!  Bring your excess candy to Services at Mallinckrodt on Sunday, November 4th and we will drop it off to the Soldiers' Angels’ "Treats for Troops" program so they can get it to our Troops and Veterans for a sweet treat.  No candy?  Halloween candy can be purchased at a deep discount right after October 31st.

North Shore Crop Hunger Walk

Team Lakeshore Unitarian Society will be walking again in the North Shore Crop Hunger Walk.  The funds we raise will help end hunger in the US and abroad.  25% of these funds will go directly to our community.

We will meet at the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston, 1427 Chicago Ave, Evanston, IL 60201. Registration is at 1:30 PM and the Walk starts at 2:00 PM.  The Walk is just under 2 miles.

Connecting with the Wonders of Nature

About the Speaker: John Levine, Board Member, BackYard Nature Center (BYNC) is involved in both restoration and education initiatives for BYNC. His focus on the board is in the areas of marketing, resource development, and planning. A passionate advocate for nature, John has volunteered with such organizations as The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, and Lincoln Park Zoo. He brings BYNC marketing and business management skills, having held leadership positions in the consumer products industry and founded a consulting practice in marketing and innovation. He also writes novels for children. John has a BA in Economics from the University of Michigan and an MBA in Marketing from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. He lives in Northfield.

The Electoral College: Its Impact on Democracy

About the Speaker: Karen Glennemeier, Ph.D., League of Women Voters Wilmette

Dr. Karen Glennemeier, League of Women Voters Wilmette, is part of a regional League committee that has been studying the Electoral College and organizing to abolish it since the last presidential election.  She is a Conservation Biologist by profession and spends her free time working with local activists on issues impacting democracy and our environment.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Grinnell College and an M.A. in endocrinology from the University of California, Berkeley.  She earned her Ph.D. in biology from the University of Michigan in 2000. During her graduate studies, Glennemeier explored the impact of persistent pollutants in the environment on frogs’ physiology and ecology.

LSUS will be getting together for coffee and conversation centered around a provocative TED talk video. TED talks are amazing short videos   outstanding thinkers from around the world. Go to TED.com and try one (you can explore by topic or just by which ones are currently highlighted.  

We will email you, along with the address of the garden, the link to the chosen TED video to watch a few days before the date. If you forget to view it, don’t let that stop you from bringing a chair and joining us. We’ll provide the “Joe” (coffee).   We’ll all provide the great conversation. If you like to nosh something with your coffee, bring that too. Best of all, bring a friend or two.
