Captain Kirk, the Bible, and Hell
January 3, 2021 @ 10:15 AM – 11:30 AM
Dr. Scott Paeth, Professor in the Department of Religious Studies, at DePaul University, will speak on the topic of Captain Kirk, the Bible, and Hell. We all know what the Bible says about Hell, or at least we think we do, just as every Star Trek fan thinks they know about Captain Kirk’s exploits. But what if we’re wrong? The picture of the Bible we have in our minds can bear little resemblance to the actual text, and that is nowhere clearer than in the way we think about what the Bible says about Hell. In this talk, Scott Paeth will examine the Biblical accounts that are commonly understood to address the issue of Hell, and show that there’s more, or perhaps less, there than meets the eye.
Paeth is the author or editor of eight books, including The Niebuhr Brothers for Armchair Theologians, Religious Perspectives on Business Ethics, Public Theology for a Global Society, and many articles. He is also the co-editor of the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics. He has been featured on Chicago Public Radio’s Eight Forty-Eight and Public Broadcasting’s Religion and Ethics Newsweekly. Scott is currently working on a number of research projects, including a book, in progress, entitled Christianity and the Economic Crisis. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary. He has spoken at LSUS numerous times over the years.
After services, from 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM, we will open Zoom for informal general discussion, as well as an opportunity to join a conversation group with Dr. Scott Paeth.
