Freud, Mahler, Winnecott and Kohut: A Look at the Thoughts on Anxiety, Depression and Mental Illness by Top Thinkers’ in the Field of Psychoanalysis

Lee Scheier, Journalist and Lecturer, will speak on the topic, Freud, Mahler, Winnicott and Kohut: A Look at the Thoughts on Anxiety, Depression and Mental Illness by Top Thinkers in the Field of Psychoanalysis. Sigmund Freud founded modern psychology with his theories about the existence of a subconscious, trauma, repression and much more. In the 125 years since his groundbreaking ideas, many theoreticians have advanced and refined them. This talk will look at Margaret Mahler, Donald Winnicott and Heinz Kohut’s ideas which are among the most important, helping to create a modern psychotherapy that is in use today.
Lee Scheier is a journalist, researcher, educator and playwright. Originally from New York City, he moved to Chicago in 1987. As a journalist he wrote many stories for the Chicago Tribune, mostly for the Sunday magazine, including many long feature cover stories. He also wrote for Chicago Magazine and other publications. His play, Transference, was produced at the Mercury Theater in Chicago. From his journalism work he developed a love of researching stories, which has led to his work as a lecturer. He spoke to us in March of this year on the topic, The Life and Work of Edward Bernays: the Father of Public Relations and Advertising Industry in America and the Use of Propaganda to Control the Minds of Americans.
