Lawmaking through International Human Rights Framework: does U.S. Immigration Policy Violate the Refugee Convention?

Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, State Representative for Illinois’ 17^th District, will speak on the topic, Lawmaking through International Human Rights Framework: Does U.S. Immigration Policy Violate the Refugee Convention and What is the Role of State Policymakers?  Rep. Gong-Gershowitz’s presentation will provide a brief introduction to current immigration law and recent changes in Illinois state law.  This discussion will focus on the impacts of these changes on vulnerable populations.

Jennifer’s leadership roles in the Immigration and Human Rights Committee and the Judiciary Civil Committee provide a platform to work toward greater equity and opportunity for all residents of Illinois by updating and strengthening human rights protections, crafting and proposing new legislation to improve our immigration system, and establishing a forum in Illinois for addressing human rights and immigration issues.
