Morality in American Foreign Policy: The Future of the International Order
February 7 @ 10:15 AM – 11:30 AM
Dr. James Marquardt, Associate Professor of Politics at Lake Forest College, will speak on the topic, Morality in American Foreign Policy: The Future of the International Order. The international order that the United States has led since 1945 owes its success to the strong support it has enjoyed both at home and abroad. Yet, nowadays, this order is troubled. At home, populists maintain that it is time for America to come home, go it alone, and put “America first.” Abroad, a rising China and a resurgent Russia are challenging America’s dominant position on the world stage and the core institutions and values of this order. America’s allies are asking whether the United States will be a reliable international partner in the years to come. This presentation asks how greater attention by American statesmen to morals in the conduct of American foreign policy might reform, revive, and extend the American order.
Dr. Marquardt earned an MA in International Relations and Affairs at the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Political Science from that same university. He teaches courses on all levels at the College, from freshmen courses on Introduction to Global Politics through to a senior level seminar on Democracy, Peace and War. He has written a book, Transparency and American Primacy in World Politics (Burlington, VT: Ashgate Publishing Ltd, 2011). Currently, he is completing a book manuscript on Mary Frances Willard, from Rogers Park, Chicago who, in 1918, served as a “welfare worker” to American soldiers in World War I France. He is also revising an academic article on American foreign policy during the Obama administration. Professor Marquardt has received numerous awards and honors for his teaching excellence.
After services, from 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM, we will open Zoom for informal general discussion, as well as an opportunity to join a conversation group with Dr. Marquardt.
