Why Companies Want Your Data

Joel Shapiro, Ph.D., J.D., Clinical Associate Professor of Managerial Economics and Decision Sciences at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, will speak on the topic, Why Companies Want Your DataCompanies value information. And they want your data – who you, are what you like, what behaviors you engage in.  Through computational sophistication, your data is being used to drive business results, from increased profit to social good and much in between.  In this discourse, we’ll discuss some of the common ways that companies use your data, some of the ethical pitfalls and the role of machines in human decision-making.

Joel Shapiro leads Kellogg’s Analytical Consulting Lab and teaches advanced analytics electives in the MBA curriculum.  His work has been featured globally via regular keynote addresses and thought-leader authorship in top business publications.  Dr. Shapiro is also a recognized expert in the creation and management of online learning programs and the impact of new methods of teaching and learning on traditional models of higher education.  He holds a Ph.D. in policy analysis from the Pardee RAND Graduate School in Santa Monica, CA, a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, and a B.S. in physics from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI.
